Actress and diplomat speak at Meredith by Mary Katherine Pittman The Meredith community experienced the diverse talents of Vinie Burrows during this year’s Black Emphasis Week. Ms. Burrows presented her Broadway acclaimed “Walk Together Children’’ on Monday, February 5, in Carswell Concert Hall. “Walk Together Children’’ is a solo stage performance written and compiled by Vinie Burrows. Her colorful and poignant presentation traces the Black experience in America from slavery to the present day. During her performance, the actress portrays various characters notable in Black history, such as an old slave woman. Sojourner Truth, a fearful runaway, a Delta cotton picker, a “scarlet woman,” and a brave school girl during the turbulent desegregation years. Ms. Burrows also exaults the Black American writer in her interpretations of two Langston Hughes poems, as well as interpretations of works of other Black writers. Vinie Burrows has per formed her “Walk Together Children” nationwide in hundreds of colleges and universities. She has also toured Europe as a performer and representative to the World Congress of Women. Ms. Burrows has appeared on various talk shows since her initial performance of “Walk Together Children” in 1968. Since “Walk Together Children,” she has created six additional solo programs. According to the program insert: “...the material she presents in “Walk Together Children” offers a seldom seen view of Black writings and the Black experience in America. Perhaps no other theatrical presentation has even given audiences so dramatic a study of changing Black attitudes and the vivid drama of Black life in America from slavery to the present.” by Nancy Newton Herbert Maulin, a diplomat in residence at North Carolina State University, spoke to the Meredith com munity on the subject of “NATO and the Russians” in the first lecture of the Great Decisions program sponsored by Continuing Education and the Department of History and Political Science. The eight week program will be held every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Cate Center. Mr. Maulin explained the changing role at NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in its relationship to Europe and Russia. NATO was organized as an alliance fqr; military and moral defense in 1949. Maulin stressed that NATO is a defense organization - not an offensive machine; therefore, the primary task has not been to keep up with the Soviet forces. According to Maulin, NATO’s strength and im portance has varied during the years since its organization. “Perhaps the lowest point was during the Vietnam period; however, now the United States’ forces in Europe have again become important and morale among the troops has improved. NATO now has top priority.” In Maulin’s opinion, “the Soviets do not have a master plan” to spread Communism throughout the world, but rather,“to watch and take advantage of the situation.” Maulin concluded that NATO will hold, and that NATO is the source of balanced power in Europe, and therefore a success. Playhhuse presents ‘‘The Diary of Anne Frank 99 Mr. ’’ nnk instructs Mrs. Van Daan (center on the hideaway living arrangements. "It’s a safety razor!” Anne exclaims as she gives Peter his Hannekah gift. Anne witnesses one of the Van Daan’s many “discussions.”
